Methuen Youth Soccer annually awards college scholarships to graduating high school seniors. We are proud to offer the Coach Francisco "Chico" Narganes scholarship as a way to honor the late coach whose dedication to family, youth, and soccer represented all that is good about the game.

Francisco Narganes was born in Spain. He came to the United States and settled in Lawrence, MA in 1968 after teaching around the world. He taught Spanish at Central Catholic High School until 1973. He was also studying at Tufts University and invited to teach several Spanish courses there. In 1977, Francisco began his career in the Lawrence Public Schools, first as a teacher and then as Assistant Principal. He was respected, admired, and loved by so many. He was married for 20 years and had four children. He was an avid soccer lover and coached many children. Coach Chico lost his life in a car accident on his way to watch his daughter's varsity softball game on May 21, 1997.

Scholarship applications can be found through the student's Naviance account starting on November 1. All applications must be received (not postmarked) by April 1 by mail or email.

MYSA scholarship selection process:

Scholarship applications are received by the Secretary who then redacts all names and personally descriptive information to assure each application is read by the scholarship committee as anonymous. The scholarship committee is compromised of 3-5 board members (may not include the Secretary). The committee is sent the scrubbed applications for review and schedules a meeting during the month of April to discuss and select. Once selection(s) are made, scholarship amounts are awarded using a previously determined budget set by the full board during the annual budget meeting each October. The week following the scholarship selection(s), the Vice President notifies the recipient/s via letter by mail. Once MYSA receives proof of enrollment at a College or University, a check is mailed to the recipient(s).
